'Big Red', sand dune at the eastern edge of the Simpson Desert, near Birdsville in Central West

Formerly known as "Nappanerica", the Big Red sand dune is the largest and most famous dune in Queensland's Simpson Desert, located 33kms west of Birdsville. Big Red is a truly unique and spectacular place, and is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the Australian Outback.

The redness comes from iron which oxidises on exposure to air. Further south, the Simpson desert sand is still white and this shows that the sand is moving northwards over time.
